I AM now in training for the biggest challenge I have ever faced. My quest is to raise a million pounds for the Cancer Research Campaign by becoming the first ever solo, unsupported explorer to reach the North Pole by the direct route.

On February 14, 2000, the expedition will set off from Ellesmere Island, in Canada, carrying the 500 pounds of equipment and rations I will need to complete the task.

I am not sure how long the trip will take me, but I will spend the majority of the first four weeks in complete darkness and intense cold, with temperatures reaching as low as minus 56 degrees.

I am 56 and this will probably be the last polar expedition I can attempt. I am desperately keen to succeed because I can think of no cause more important than the challenge to find a cure for cancer.

Will you help meet the challenge by sponsoring me? I am determined to do my best to reach the North Pole, but only together can we raise the million pounds I have promised the Cancer Research Campaign.

If you want to help please contact me care of: The Cancer Research Campaign, 10 Cambridge Terrace, London NW1 4JL.
