BURNLEY MP Peter Pike is making sure his Christmas cards are being put to good use.

He is handing them in at the post office where they will go into a recycling scheme to make homework reading diaries for primary school children.

More than three million children across the country are taking part in the scheme and the diaries will help to encourage their reading and improve their literacy.

About 1,000 post offices in the North West are acting as collection points for the cards and envelopes. Mr Pike went to Burnley post office to meet branch manager Tracy Weall and to hand in his cards and envelopes.

A post office spokesman said the scheme would be beneficial in two ways, by supporting children's literacy skills and by reducing landfill and protecting the environment for the future.
