EXTRA cash for spending on Pendle services has been welcomed by the area's Labour group leader.

The Government has boosted Pendle's standard spending assessment (SSA), the amount the borough is allowed to spend, by 4.5 per cent to £9.2million, and increased external funding.

Council Labour group leader Coun Azhar Ali today welcomed the extra cash.

"This is a tremendous boost for the ratepayers across Pendle because it will mean extra monies being available to maintain and increase services," he said.

"Quite clearly, since 1998 after seven years of a nil increase this does help the budget process."

Coun Ali added that in comparison with other similar authorities in the country Pendle had done extremely well.

"This Labour Government is beginning to deliver extra resources to local government which is excellent news."
