Clock Face Miners 9, Haydock A 14

TWO tries and two drop goals by Haydock's man of the match Geoff Newton eventually helped them to win this enthralling game at Clock Face.

Promotion favourites Haydock were made to work hard, and it wasn't until mid-way through the first half that they finally broke through Clock's defence, when Newton raced through for his first try.

Clock reduced the arrears minutes later with a Karl Walker penalty, then took the lead when centre Glynn Walsh intercepted a pass on the half way line, and raced away to score between the posts, Walker converting. Then just before half-time a Neil Chisnall penalty for Haydock brought the score to 8-6 at the break.

The second half started well for Clock with a Steve Rybczynski drop goal after just three minutes but despite several chances they could not increase their lead, and Haydock slowly began to get on top.

Newton then went in for his second try from close range, forcing his way over, and Chisnall added on the conversion, but after that Clock's defence held firm, with Colin Stout, Mike Simmons and Mark Chatterton working well in defence.

Newton then added to his points tally with two late drop goals to make sure of victory.

Despite their lowly position Clock can take great comfort from this game, as all the players put in fine performances with the Jonwood Joinery man of the match going to Graham Leadbetter.

Best for Haydock were Keith Dugdale, Gary Burgess and Alan Clark. Haydock B 32, Langworthy Reds 15

Haydock found themselves behind by 15-0 after the first 20 minutes, and looked like staring defeat in the face. But they turned the game around by scoring 32 points without reply. Substitute M. Coleman who scored their first try with a conversion by Burgess. Then centre Bradshaw went over from 20 yards. Burgess converted to make it 15-12 at half time.

Haydock went ahead with a try from Charnock to make it 16-15 to Haydock B. Then Charnock went in for his second try to make it 20-15 and Haydock went further ahead with tries from Worrall and another one from Coleman plus two conversions from Burgess to make the final score 32-15 to Haydock.
