HUDDERSFIELD RES 2
BURNLEY RESERVES 1
A BRILLIANT performance from goalkeeper Craig Mawson wasn't enough to stop Burnley from slipping to a Pontins League Premier Division defeat at the McAlpine Stadium.
Mawson made a string of fine stops against a strong Terriers side that included former Blackburn Rovers midfielder Scott Sellars, ex-Southampton defender Ken Monkou and former Manchester United winger Ben Thornley.
But he couldn't prevent Rob Edwards heading home a 46th-minute winner after the impressive Anthony Shandran had cancelled out Delroy Facey's early strike.
Burnley included trialists Stephen Rose from Manchester United and John Boardman of Liverpool and the pair showed up well given that the Clarets were under pressure for long spells.
Gordon Armstrong also turned in a solid performance before worryingly limping off just before half-time.
But the lively Shandran was the pick of the Clarets side, scoring a stunning 41st-minute equaliser with a fierce right-foot drive after being picked out by Ronnie Jepson.
However, Burnley were on level terms for just five minutes before Edwards converted a Simon Baldry cross.
The home side looked to add a third but were denied by Mawson, whose best save was an incredible 84th-minute block from Paul Scott's six-yard header.
Burnley reserves: Mawson, Rose, Armstrong (Williamson 42), Heywood, Boardman, Jepson (Leeson 57), Scott, Kelly (Davis 74), Shandran, Bowden, Devenney. Subs not used: Waine, Paxton (gk).
