CHEMISTRY student Catherine Heyes provided the catalyst for an Oxford boat race double.

The 20-year-old former Rainford High School pupil was sat at number three in the women's boat that beat Cambridge by two-and-a-half lengths at Henley on Saturday.

It ended a run of eight defeats for the dark blues.

It capped a remarkable rise to success for Catherine, a stuident at Pembroke College.

For the former Wigan Wasp swimmer only took up rowing 18 months ago.

And it was a reward for months of lung-busting work on the Thames.

Said Catherine: "We train 14 times a week -a total of 35 hours."
