MOTORISTS bombarded a Darwen company with complaints after a landmark clock disappeared.

The digital clock at Stainless Metric Stock, which also gives temperature readings, was damaged by youths with air rifles.

Eric Jones, the owner of the Bolton Road firm, said: "The digital clock has been on our roof for years.

"We took it down about five weeks ago because it stopped working. It was full of holes made by youths taking pot shots at it with an air rifle.

"Its become a bit of landmark but never expected the reaction we got.

"We were bombarded with inquiries. It's been incredible. People said they rely on the clock to check the time and temperature as they pass by."

Mr Jones commissioned a new clock as a result of the reaction.

It has now been placed back on the roof after a five-week absence.
