THE lead guitarist of a Beatles tribute band is appealing for the safe return of a rare guitar which was stolen.

Steven Gee, 32, takes the role of George Harrison in The Beetles UK, who are based in Clayton-le-Moors, and is offering a reward for information or the return of the Gretch 1962 country classic guitar.

The guitar, which is valued at £3,000, has great sentimental value as it was bought by Steven's wife Melinda, 30, as a present for their first wedding anniversary.

It was stolen from a Mercedes van parked in Sparth Avenue, Clayton-le-Moors, on April 25. Steven, who has a three-year-old daughter Sarah, said: "It is the same type of guitar that George Harrison used in the early years of The Beatles.

"The guitar is made in America and is quite rare. The guitars are made to order and the guy in America said we were the first to order one in the UK.

"The people who pinched it probably won't even know what it is."

Steven has had to borrow a guitar and the band, which was established last February, is suffering as a result.

The thieves also took another guitar, which has since been found, and a mini-disc player. Posters have been put up around Clayton-le-Moors asking for help to trace the missing guitar.

Steven added: "It is really upsetting. I can't afford to buy a new one and people who come to see us expect the right equipment as well as the right songs. It is embarrassing.

"But I want it returning more than anything because of its sentimental value."
