MAURICE and Anna Priest are so proud of the garden they have created over the last 10 years that they are opening it up to the public.

It is situated high above Park House in Newchurch Road, Bacup, which offers outstanding views of the area.

For years the stone spiral staircase, which provides access from their house to the garden, lay undiscovered.

Maurice and Anna noticed a damp patch and when they investigated found the old staircase. They opened it up, saving themselves a long walk to the garden. They believe the staircase used to lead to a turret, demolished years ago.

The couple also unearthed the foundations of the old Curve Street Mill which was demolished about 60 years ago and developed the area into a beautiful stone terrace.

There is evidence of the mill foreman's office with its original fireplace.

An old cast iron bath, which was too heavy to move, was turned into an alpine flower garden and a derelict pigeon loft was converted into a summer house where tea and cakes are served to visitors.

Maurice said: "All the materials we have used in the garden are recycled, like the old pigeon loft. We started developing the garden after I took early retirement 10 years ago and have been busy on it ever since. Visitors are welcome to enjoy it and the outstanding views."

All the proceeds from admission fees go to charities run by the Soroptimists. Anna has been a member for many years.

Admission is by appointment only and costs £2. Bookings on 01706 876965.
