A MOTHER, whose two year old son died from brain injuries inflicted by her husband, has failed in an appeal court bid to win her freedom from a 12-month jail term.

Georgina Shackleton, 23, of Sherwood Road, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to two counts of child cruelty at Preston Crown Court on January 31 this year.

Mrs Justice Hallett, sitting in London's Criminal Appeal Court with Mr Justice Ian Kennedy, rejected arguments by her lawyers that she should not have been sent to jail.

She said the message had to go out that "children must come first and children must be protected."

The offences came to light when Mrs Shackleton's two year old twin sons, Jack and Adam, were admitted to Burnley General Hospital on April 16 last year. The family were living at Bar Street in Burnley, at the time. Adam had large areas of bruising on the back of his neck.

Jack later died from brain injuries inflicted by Mrs Shackleton's husband, who was subsequently jailed for seven years for manslaughter and child cruelty.
