A TODDLER was grabbed from a playground in Blackburn last night and assaulted before being dumped in the street.
The 18-month-old-girl, who is not being named by police, was snatched from a playground in Croasdale Square near Audley shortly after 6.30pm.
Detectives believe the tot was beaten up before being dumped in nearby Pringle Street but there is no evidence a weapon was used or that the assault was off a sexual nature.
The youngster suffered serious injuries in the assault and was recovering from her ordeal at Blackburn Royal Infirmary.
Police have arrested a youth in connection with the attack but are still appealing for any witnesses to contact them as soon as possible.
Detectives are still trying to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the assault and will be interviewing family members later today.
Detective Sergeant Paul Murphy said: "This was extremely serious incident and we would like to talk to anyone who may have been in the area at the time the child was taken.
"We have arrested a youth in connection with the incident and will be interviewing him today about the assault."
Anyone who can help the police with their inquiries should contact Blackburn CID on 01254 51212 or the confidential Crimestoppers line 0800 555111.
