I THINK that most people will be in harmony with the phrase 'Good riddance' when referring to Councillor Adrian Shurmer -- be they Tory, Labour or, most of all, the people of Great Harwood he was meant to represent in the council chamber.

He turned out to be a pain in the backside -- a maverick who never did one positive thing during the period he attended the few meetings he chose to.

However, the real varmints in this insidious episode of Hyndburn Council's history are the local Tory party.

It was they who encouraged this man's campaign against George Slynn. It was they who promised him a role in their administration and it was they who started the foul campaign and this man leapt on the disgraceful bandwagon.

I have known George Slynn for many years and I have no hesitation in stating that he is one of the most honourable, dedicated, sincere persons I have met in the whole of my 35 years of public service. I am sure that most of the people in Great Harwood would endorse this statement.
