ANGRY residents plagued by speeding traffic and 'rat run' drivers have sent two protest petitions to Burnley Council.

People in the Briercliffe Road area of Burnley are also worried about speeding traffic.

Sixty-three local people have signed a petition about traffic on the stretch of Briercliffe Road between Standen Hall Drive and Casterton Avenue.

The planning committee will be told on Thursday that funding could be available for traffic calming measures under Lancashire County Council's safety schemes based on the accident saving potential. The committee will be asked to approve submission of a scheme to the county for inclusion in its programme.

A second petition signed by 68 residents asks for traffic calming measures to discourage drivers from taking a 'rat run' route between Briercliffe Road and Eastern Avenue via Croasdale Avenue, Sutton Avenue, Minehead Avenue and Lytham Road.

A registration plate survey is to be taken to determine the volume of traffic using the diversion and to assess the scale of the problem. If a significant problem is found, councillors will be asked to approve a scheme for traffic calming to again be sent for inclusion in the county programme.
