A TOTAL of 163 television licence dodgers have been netted in a month-long crackdown in Burnley.

They were caught in TV Licensing's Target Zero campaign which homed in on BB10, 11 and 12 postcode areas.

Doug Mullin, regional manager, warned: "Those who persist in watching television without a licence are becoming more conspicuous than ever and run an increasing risk of being caught.

"The evaders lose out twice. Not only do they face a visit to the magistrates court and heavy fine but they still have to buy a television licence."

Special teams of inquiry officers targeted addresses in Burnley with the very latest in portable detection equipment which can spot evaders in seconds, even in high rise flats.

They were backed up by the computer data base which contains up to date information on the licence status of 26 million addresses throughout the UK.
