REGARDING Mitchell Thomas's decision to think about his future after only being offered a one-year contract by Burnley, loyalty is something which was quite clearly not given to him by Stan Ternent and the board.

You can't blame Mitchell for looking for the best deal for himself and his family. And considering what he has achieved with his consistent performances, like many supporters, I think he deserved a two-year deal.

A lot of people may ask if Mitchell, now 35, could cope with two more years playing at a higher level. Look at the facts and the answer is definitely 'Yes'. He arrived in the summer of 1999, has played in every pre-season game, has only missed two league games playing, 44 full games out of a possible 46. He also played in five cup games.

He missed the Bury game away through flu and the local derby at Turf Moor against Preston North End through suspension. Both games resulted in defeat.

He is arguably one of the fittest players on the books and always gives 100 per cent effort.

Mitchell also played a big part in selling Burnley to Ian Wright and persuaded him to sign.

The hard work to re-establish ourselves as a major force in Division One starts now, stability and consolidation are vital -- that is why Mitchell Thomas is vital to Burnley.

In the past, players of great ability, notably Tom Cowan, have not had their contract renewed and have been allowed to leave under the Bosman ruling.

Whatever the reason, an excellent full back has been allowed to leave.
