SINCE moving to Blackburn from Bristol last August, I have found that the North-country reputation for friendliness and kindness is well-deserved.

My West Country 'Wurzel-type' accent has identified me as a stranger in your midst, and has provoked kindness and welcome wherever I have been.

For my part, I find it easier to be friendly to animals than people and am often seen around with a motley group of ancient Jack Russell terriers.

I would like to draw readers' attention to a public meeting which is being held in the Kathleen Ferrier Bar, King George's Hall, Blackburn, on Monday, June 5, at 7.30pm to draw attention to the cruelty of vivisection -- in the hope that some local people will be moved to join in protesting at such abominations.

DOREEN PAIN, East Park Avenue, Blackburn.
