A Cricket team has fought back against a seven-day eviction notice to quit its ground with the message that it will not be forced out.

Hussania Cricket Club was told by Lancashire County Council to leave its St Andrew's ground, Burnley, by Monday May 22, after residents complained about flying cricket balls causing damage to their property.

The complaints were aired at a police and community forum but members of the cricket club were annoyed that they were not consulted about the decision.

Secretary Ejaz Hussain said: "We are still there and playing games at the ground.

"We are asking the county council to talk to us and they are arranging a date to meet in the next few weeks. "We are hoping to discuss the situation because we are concerned about their decision to terminate our licence.

"The club was not involved in the decision and it was based purely on the complaints from the residents.

"We would also like to tell the county council that the club has got fixture commitments and we can't just disband the club like this.

"Our solicitor is talking to the council and we will play there until a satisfactory decision has been made.

"We are not satisfied with this decision."

The club has three teams with a membership of fifty players, playing in the North East Lancashire League, the Pendle and District League and the Burnley League.

A spokesman for Lancashire County Council said: "All we can say at this stage is that we will be having discussions with the cricket club."
