FIREFIGHTERS managed to stop major damage to Leigh Cricket Pavilion after youths set a pile of chairs and tables on fire.
The club steward, who lives nearby the hut in Beech Walk, raised the alarm in the early hours of Sunday morning, after smelling smoke.
He called for help and tackled the flames himself with a water extinguisher.
A crew from Leigh fire station managed to confine the damage to the tables, chairs and door frame.
