NIGEL Evans has backed Home Secretary Jack Straw over his refusal to allow a murderer to father a child through artificial insemination of his wife.
Blackburn MP and Home Secretary Mr Straw ruled that Gavin Mellor should not be allowed to donate sperm to his spouse to have a child.
Mr Mellor was sentenced to life for murdering 74-year-old North African war hero George Simms who was attacked walking home from his working mens club by a drug crazed Gavin Mellor. Ribble Valley MP Mr Evans said he was delighted that 96 per cent of viewers who rang a Granada TV poll supported Mr Straw's decision.
He said: "People are on the side of the victim and his family and they, like me, feel that too often the rights of the criminal seem far more important than the rights of the victim.
"Liberal do gooders want Mr Mellor to artificially inseminate his wife, but a line has to be drawn."
