AN animal sanctuary which achieved most of its millennium projects is asking the public for help to develop a hospital building and vet's room.

Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary, Turn Village, has stone clad buildings for its cats and dogs, a sound stable block, dog runs, field shelters, a duck pond, cafe, shop and staff room.

Chairman Dr Muriel Bird said: "Back in the 1960s and 1970s our cats and dogs were houses in leaky wooden buildings and the horses had old railway wagons for shelter.

"It was all we could afford -- funds were very low, so it was not until the 1980s that the committee could embark on an ambitious programme of improvements."

Some money has already been raised for the sanctuary's final plans and more will be raised at three open days on July 16, October 1 and December 3.
