BUS drivers have decided against all-out strike action -- but plan to stage more one-day stoppages throughout East Lancashire.

Stagecoach Ribble drivers based in depots in Blackburn, Burnley, Clitheroe, Preston and Chorley decided against all-out strike in a series of mass meetings on Friday, but intend to hold one day stoppages on Friday and the following Monday, July 10.

Seven one-day strikes have already been held as part of their long-running pay dispute, and union representative Roy Husband said he expected more stoppages to be held in the coming weeks.

He said the Transport and General Workers' Union intended to give the minimum seven days' notice of each strike. The union has asked Stagecoach Ribble to continue negotiations through ACAS, the government body which arbitrates in disputes, but union officials said managers had refused.

He said: "We just want to get back around the table with the management. We are considering other action including overtime bans and work to rules.

"The membership is solidly behind the action, just like it was at the start of the dispute in January. We sincerely apologise for the obvious difficulties this causes for all bus passengers."

Stagecoach Ribble drivers say they are paid less than other Stagecoach drivers in other parts of the country, and their pay has fallen behind the national averages for male manual workers by 15 per cent since bus deregulation.

Stagecoach Ribble management have offered a pay increase of three per cent over 12 months or four per cent over 16 months, but union officials say it is not a reasonable offer.

The strikes have already caused widespread disruption although skeleton services have continued to run on major routes and councils have replaced school bus services to primary schools.

An enquiry hotline is available on 01772 886633 from 8am to 8pm each day, and from 6am on Thursday, Friday and Monday. Customers can also ring Stagecoach Ribble head office on 01772 254754 from Monday to Friday from 8am to 5pm, and from 6am on strike days.
