THE first woman president of the 147-year-old Stand Cricket and Tennis Club is bowled over after being nominated for the Lancashire Woman of the Year title.

But Glenda Hegg, the mother of England cricketer Warren, insists that there are others who deserve the award more than her.

She said: "I can't believe it, there are people who have done so much more than I have for their communities. It is nice to be nominated but I am surprised."

Glenda (57), of Sunny Bank Road, Unsworth, has been involved with the Whitefield club for 27 years. Her late husband, Kevin, was also a member and both their sons, Warren and Martin, played cricket there.

In March she made history and the headlines, when she was appointed president. It is thought she is one of the first women presidents of a cricket club in the country.

The Cats Protection League is another of her passions and she is also an active member of Stand Church, but maintains that her work is "nothing special".

She said: "I am just a member of the church and like a lot of other people, I always support it.

"The Cats Protection League is also my favourite charity and I like to support their functions and do a bit of rescue work. I liaise with other members so they have got a little less work to do."

The Lancashire Woman of the Year award recognises women who have made an "outstanding contribution to the community".

It takes place at Gibbon Bridge Country House Hotel, at Chipping near Preston, on October 4.

Glenda added: "I am really looking forward to meeting with people who do a lot of good for charity. There must be many ladies who do much more than me, helping in hospitals and fund-raising for children's charities.

"I think I have been nominated just because I am president of the club but it is the whole club that is doing well.

"We have got such a lovely bunch of people running things at the moment and they all work so hard."

Stand chairman Mr Ken Holt added: "Glenda is very special to this club in so many ways. We are extremely proud that she should be nominated to take part in this prestigious event."
