BUSINESS failures are still rising in the region despite significant falls nationally.
The latest survey carried out by business information company Dun & Bradstreet found that the number of businesss which collapsed in the first half of the year rose by 1.2 per cent to 2,401 compared to the same period last year.
The figure was made up of 1,104 company liquidations, down by 2.1 per cent, and 1,297 bankruptcies, up by 4.2 per cent.
Nationally, business failures fell by 4.8 per cent to 20,264 with the rate dropping slightly faster for larger than for smaller businesses.
Failures increased most in Wales where the figure rose by 6.3 per cent.
