PART TIME workers in East Lancashire are set to benefit from new rules.
But low pay campaigners are warning that many will miss out on the new benefits aimed at making part time staff equal to their full time colleagues.
The Part Time Work regulations say that workers should be paid at the same rate as full time staff and enjoy the same holidays and benefits such as pensions and sick pay. It also covers access to training and staff discounts.
The Low Pay Unit in the North West today welcomed the new rights but warned that some workers won't benefit.
"A part time worker can only claim equal rights with a worker in a comparable job working for the same company on the same kind of contract," explained Alison Foreman, employment rights advice worker.
"This means that many part-time workers will not be able to benefit because they may not be able to find a comparable worker."
A factsheet has been produced by the unit both for employees and employers and is available on 0161 953 4024.
