JOB losses in East Lancashire over the past month are helping to contribute to a meltdown in the manufacturing sector, according to a union boss.

A survey carried out by the GMB union found that more than 10,000 manufacturing jobs were lost nationwide in June. The figure includes losses announced at Leoni in Accrington, Cupal in Blackburn, Sermatech in Colne, BAE Systems at Samlesbury and Corus in Blackburn.

Last month more than 2,000 jobs were lost in East Lancashire alone.

"Manufacturing is in total meltdown," warned John Edmonds, general secretary of the union.

And he added that the Government had to act now to stem the job cuts.

"Over 10,000 jobs in one month and still the Government will not act. Ministers must alleviate the crisis before there is no manufacturing left."

The survey found that since May 1997, more than 245,000 manufacturing jobs had been lost.
