PUPILS at a Blackburn High School are moving out of their school hall and into a local church to hold their morning assemblies.

From September, the pupils and staff of St Wilfrid's CE High School, will take part in worship at their parish church of St Luke's with St Philip's, Bank Top, Blackburn. Five-hundred children will attend each service, with two different year groups present in the church daily. The move is taking place because the school does not have a space big enough to accommodate assemblies.

David Whyte, acting head at the school, said: "Starting our school day with worship within a church environment will enable all members of the St Wilfrid's family to focus on our mission statement and will greatly enhance the spiritual life within the school."

Rev Anthony Bedell, vicar of St Luke's with St Philip's, said: "We are delighted this has worked out so well with St Wilfrid's. As a local Christian community, we welcome the students and staff into our lives and worship."
