FAMILY and friends of a young cerebral palsy sufferer who captured the hearts of his community have been left devastated by his sudden death.

Karl Graham died peacefully in his sleep on Sunday aged five and a half.

He was well known in the Bold Venture area of Darwen, where he lived with his parents Julie and Andy, until the family recently moved to Peregrine Drive, Lynwood.

He was also a familiar sight at Darwen Leisure Centre, where where he enjoyed watching the swimming sessions. His parents and grandma, Sandra O'Neil, are members of the club.

Not to be outdone, he took part in the Tuesday evening swim session for special needs children.

His grandad, Terry O'Neil, of Radford Gardens, described Karl as "very special with a winning smile and infectious laugh." The youngster attended Broadlands School in Roman Road, Blackburn, for two and and half years.

Although his condition meant he had no use of his arms and legs or speech, he was able to communicate.

Headteacher Dorothy Mitchell, said: "Karl's death has come as a great shock to everybody connected with the school.

"He was a little boy who touched people's hearts. He had a lovely sunny smile, which we will always remember."

Two years ago, Karl received funds raised during the annual Darwen Biathlon, organised by Darwen Masters Swimming Club, which enabled his family to buy much-needed equipment for his care. Karl's family believe he died of natural causes, but are waiting for the results of a post mortem examination.

His death has been reported to the coroner and funeral arrangements will be made known at a later date.

Julie and Andy have requested family flowers only with donations in their son's memory to Broadlands School via Darwen Funeral Services.
