VANDALS ran amok in a junior school, setting off fire extinguishers, smashing windows and throwing the school clock into a pond.

Youths broke into Rosehill Junior School, Moorland Road, on Monday evening, setting off fire extinguishers and smashing windows.

They also threw a fire extinguisher and school clock into a pond in the inner garden.

Caretaker Mike Awty who was cleaning up the mess today said: "It looks as though a group of teenagers have been on the roof.

"They have peeled lead flashing back to force a roof window to get into the school and drop into the inner garden."

Mr Awty added: "They have taken three fire extinguishers and let them off. They have thrown one and a corridor clock into the school pond.

"They have taken another two fire extinguishers into the boys' toilets and thrown them through the windows. They also removed some slates from the roof."

Mr Awty said nothing was stolen and he put the incident down to high jinks at the start of the school holidays.

A large number of video tapes were found in grassed area at the school. They were possibly from an earlier theft at a garage in the area. The school is still trying to work out how much it will cost to put right the damage was caused by the vandals.

Police are investigating and CCTV footage is being examined to see if the vandals were caught on camera.
