REGARDING your report on the 'spy in the cellar' (LET, July 3), while having the highest regard for club owner Margo Grimshaw, who supports the device that some licensees object to brewers Daniel Thwaites installing, you quite rightly pointed out that she is not a tenant, but is self-employed and a free trade licensee.
With this comes all the trappings of the free trade -- barrelage discounts, interest free loans, deferred payment loans, write off loans, etc. These will more than offset any initial cost of the equipment.
It is rather sad that, as this particular issue is aimed at and directly affects tenants, Daniel Thwaites could not come up with a tenant who supports this system.
Furthermore, if this system is so beneficial to tenants and the running of licensed premises in an efficient manner, then why is it not fitted universally throughout Thwaites managed house estate where the brewery has direct control?
