MIDDLESBROUGH have formally withdrawn from the race to sign Chris Sutton, putting Rovers' move for Brian Deane on hold.
The former Blackburn striker had asked for more time to weigh up a £6 move from Chelsea with Celtic and Aston Villa also in the running for his signature.
But Boro can't afford to wait Sutton to make up his mind.
"Chris wanted another week or 10 days to think about his decision but we have to move on," said chairman Steve Gibson.
Any approach for Deane may not be delayed for too long, however, as Boro boss Bryan Robson does have other targets in mind and has spoken to clubs about potential striking reinforcements.
