A PRESTON councillor has spearheaded a a pro-European event.

Broadgate councillor Alan Valentine (pictured) together with Sara Priem, the president of the Young European Movement, attended the first day of the week-long Preston Youth 2000 conference which started on Monday (July 3), at the University of Central Lancashire, with the aim of breaking down barriers in Europe.

Both represented the pro-European and pro-Euro campaigning organisations -- the Young European Movement and Britain in Europe.

More than 400 young people from across Europe are expected to join the event which will incorporate various entertainments at several venues.

This evening (Thursday, July 6) Preston's Mayor, Joe Hood, will be hosting a reception at the Harris Museum and Art Gallery for the signing of the 'Scrolls of Friendship'.

On Friday evening there will be a gala concert in the Charter Theatre, Preston, starting at 7.30pm featuring a variety of local and international performers of all ages.

And on Saturday (July 8), from 10-6pm, Preston's Flag Market will be transformed into a festival venue with live music, dance and street theatre. The week's finale will be a massive dance night in town from 6pm.

Coun Valentine said: "Preston Youth 2000 is an important event for the town, with more than 400 young people from across Europe attending. I'm proud Preston is taking a lead in creating a Europe without barriers between nations."

Sara Priem, from the Young European Movement, added: "I'm looking forward to coming to Preston Youth 2000 to discuss the breaking down of barriers between nations with so many people. Increasingly, young people are living and studying abroad, taking advantage of our rights as members of the EU.

"Events such as Preston Youth 2000 help combat xenophobia stirred up by the national press."
