HYNDBURN'S Anna Griffiths had a day to remember in the first ever McDonald's meeting at Preston's new track. She won the 'Field athlete of the match' award after winning the under 13 shot with a Grade 1 Standard 8.85. She also raced to a Grade 1 Standard to take victory in the 70m hurdles. All the winners became the first ever track record holders, they include Lauren Grime in the under 15 discus and under 17 Hayley Bullen, a winner in both the 300m hurdles and flat 3000m. In all the team set 16 new personal bests.

Paul Sockett warmed up for this weekend's English Schools Championship with a personal best in the shot when Hyndburn Boys travelled to Deeside for a McDonald's Young Athletes fixture. Paul was also second in the under 17 discus and hammer as the team finished 5th. Joe McGuinness was a winner in the under 15's 400m'A' race while in the under 13's 100m they were inches from double success. Liam Regan was the 'B' winner and Callum Fitzpatrick was placed second in the 'A' race with the same time as the winner. The men from Blackburn Harriers and Rossendale Harriers were in Northern Cup action at Lancaster. Star man for Blackburn was Ben Fish who reduced his PB in the 5000m by 10 seconds to 15:20. Rob Barton set a track record of 1:54.7 in the 800m and there was a season's best of 50:65 for Mark Birchall in the javelin. All three won their events, and there was a PB for Mark Haydock who was 3rd in the hammer.

The team was 3rd behind Trafford and Sale. Rossendale were involved in a different match finishing 5th of 7 behind Southport. Chris White was a double winner recording 2:02 in the 800m and 10:20 in the 3000m steeplechase. In form Nick Hatchard took the 1500m in 4:14, and Martin Lee was 2nd in the 10K. Steve Duxbury in the 5K and Anthony Gotts in the triple jump both logged 3rd places.

Blackburn's girls were second in their league match at Wrexham. In four events the team won both the A and B string races. Carrie Hamilton and Helen Leigh combined in the under 17 high jump, Rachel Holt and Anna Brookes shared the honours in the under 15's 1500m, Candy Hamilton and Sarah Blackburn were the 800m winners in the same age group, and for the under 13's Dominique Morton and Sarah Garrett took the 1200m. Other winners included Claire Critchley and Caris Lake.
