BURY CLARION

ON a glorious summer day, cub captain Frank Jefferson decided that there was no better Sunday ride than the Trough of Bowland which site astride the county boundary of Lancashire and Yorkshire.

Although it is a trough between the fells, there is such a demanding climb that some walking is usually indulged in.

Not on this occasion, though, perhaps spurred on by a vintage car rally chugging its way through the trough. As these vehicles must have been between 70 and 80-years-old it was remarkable that they were performing so well.

Refreshment was taken at Scorton and for the second week in succession the return journey to Bury was over the Belmont moors.

Next Wednesday, August 9, we are organising a Wednesday evening potter which will include some off road riding. Meet 6.45pm at Greenmount church.

All are welcome. For further information ring Peter Roscoe on 0161 761 6856.

CLUB FOR THE VISUALLY

HANDICAPPED

STEVE Conway, who hails from Northern Ireland but is now domiciled in Prestwich, graduated from being a steersman on our Wednesday evening runs to last weekend's Sunday ride.

He was particularly pleased to take this step, especially on such a splendid day for cycling.

Included in the 16 riders who turned out were two other Prestwich riders -- Susan Glove and Martin Conway. Haigh Hall was the destination for lunch and this was reached by taking the Moss Bank Way and Blackrod route, with the return journey through Farnworth and Little Lever.

Fourteen-year-old Robert Turner from Tottington continues to be one of the most regular riders on our Wednesday evening runs.

Last week's outing was a little further than usual with the riders making their way to Middleton by way of Heaton Park and returning through Rochdale.

LANCASHIRE ROAD CLUB

MIKE Bland has enjoyed some good form in three recent 25 miles time trials with two personal best rides and two handicap prizes.

In the Lancaster CC event he recorded his first personal best of one hour three minutes and 35 seconds for third handicap.

The following week's Liverpool Century event was held in inclement weather conditions and he slipped back to 1.4.16 but won second handicap.

His last event was the Central Lancs CC 25 in which he returned another personal best of 1.2.51.

Chris Smith has had some bad luck in recent weeks with punctures in three events, but he did complete the Liverpool Century event after puncturing at the start and being given a 50-second penalty.

His counting time then was 1.6.00 but his actual time was 1.5.10. Walshaw rider Phil Rowley teamed up with his son Jonathan for the recent Wold CC ten-miles time trial which they completed in 26.53.

He rode solo in Lancashire Road Club's open 25 which he completed in 1.8.53 and last week he teamed up with Derek Pritchard, who now races as a member of Lancashire Road Club for ABC Centreville's evening eight-miles time trial, which they completed in 21.34.
