SOME of East Lancashire's leading citizens today added their tributes to the nation's grandest centenarian.

And Burnley MP Peter Pike told of his fond memories of the day he was able to raise a glass to her in person when she lunched at Manchester Town Hall.

He said: "After we all toasted her, she pushed her chair back and proposed a toast to the local people, which really got a tremendous response. It was typical of her.

"I'd like to wish her all the best on her birthday and I'm sure it will add another day of memories to her thousands of memories of serving her country. I hope she enjoys every minute of it."

The Mayor of the Ribble Valley, Chris Holtom, saw the preparations for her birthday when he visited Buckingham Palace for a garden party last week.

He said: "The bunting was superb, we were very impressed. I know that the people of the Ribble Valley have enormous respect and affection for her and I hope that she continues to enjoy good health."

Malcolm Doherty, leader of the Blackburn with Darwen council, said: "On behalf of the people of the borough, I would like to wish her a very happy birthday and hope she continues in good health and happiness."
