NICK Dougherty's bid for glory in the English Amateur Championship came to an end yesterday when he crashed out at Royal Lytham.

And local interest disappeared when Blackburn's Tony Jackson saw his brave run come to an end with a three and two defeat to seeded Somerset player John Morgan.

Dougherty, supported all week by a large contingent from his Shaw Hill club, was behind for most of his match against Barry Parker, a Cheshire county player who works in the pro shop at his club, Reddish Vale.

The 18-year-old England cap was three down at one stage and although he took the match to the last hole with a long putt on the 17th, a disappointing appraoch shot ended his hopes of repeating the victory of mentor Nick Faldo of 25 years ago.

"I'm gutted," said Dougherty.

"That was a terrible mistake on the last hole.

"I hit a perfect tee shot then to miss the green from 112 yards is unforgivable.

"That's the worst I've played this week and my putting has been poor.

"It cost me today because I didn't hit it close enough."

Meanwhile, Paul Dwyer was two shots off the lead going into his second round of the BMW Russian Open in Moscow today.

The Clitheroe man, who played in the Open at St Andrews a fortnight ago, shot a 67 to put him on the tail of the early pacesetters.
