PEOPLE-power is behind a campaign aimed at finding a solution to one of Leyland's most dangerous roads.

Residents living in the Bow Lane area of the town are fuming over the problems of heavy traffic on Leyland Way -- dubbed a 'death trap' following a catalogue of accidents and near-misses.

They claim that traffic is so bad, rows of cars have to queue up at the junction of Bow Lane and Leyland Way with pedestrians regularly taking their lives in their hands trying to cross the road.

Following a consultation by local councillors and residents, one answer was to campaign for a roundabout and pedestrian crossing at the junction.

Councillor Mathew Tomlinson explained: "Leyland Way is so busy with traffic from the motorway junction that cars coming from Bow Lane just can't get out.

"Another problem is that cars, and in particular lorries, thunder down Leyland Way at 70 and 80mph after coming off the M6. "The idea for a roundabout and crossing came from a number of residents living on Bow Lane. This was then featured in one of our newsletters and I received a tremendous response from people saying that it was such a good idea."

Now, Councillor Tomlinson has contacted South Ribble council's highways department to see if the two schemes can get the go-ahead.

He added: "The highways department told me that the pedestrian crossing looks like a real possibility, but we will just have to sit tight and wait and see.

"Something drastic needs to be done, and soon."

Councillor Derek Forrest, chairman of Leyland East, said: "The junctions along the whole of Leyland Way, including Bent Lane and Bow Lane, are awful -- no-one can deny that.

"However, we passed a request to Lancashire County Council for details on what problems they had information on along that whole junction and we are still waiting for a response."
