BLACKPOOL Sixth Form College has sacked its principal in a shroud of mystery and in the wake of months of disputes.

Christopher PJ Fulford was dismissed by the board of governors on Thursday of last week (August 3) for "gross misconduct" but he has vowed to fight the decision.

His dismissal comes after months of being at loggerheads with the governors and being suspended earlier in the year.

The 68-year-old principal was on a full salary of £83,000 while a probe took place into "certain issues concerning him."

It was reported then that the governors were investigating allegations that he had fraudulently claimed money back on his petrol expenses.

Mr Fulford stated that it was a mistake and he had offered to repay the money, but was suspended. In a statement released by the governors last week, they say they are acting in line with "established formal procedure."

The statement added: "While the investigations were taking place and because of Mr Fulford's age, health and previously good record at the college, governors discussed with him the possibility of retirement. Nothing came of these discussions."

Last week Mr Fulford made a presentation with his barrister to the board of governors. A unanimous vote followed to dismiss Mr Fulford on the grounds of gross misconduct.

However, Mr Fulford, who has been at the sixth form for more than 20 years, has pledged to fight to overturn the decision and says he intends to pursue a case of unfair dismissal through the courts.

The college will now be run by Mr Jeff Holland until recruitment starts for a new principal.
