THANKS to the organisers of the Carling Weekend Leeds 2000 festival, Pulse is able to offer readers the chance to win a pair of tickets - which include camping.

Now in it's second year at Temple Newsam Park, Leeds, the festival takes place over the August bank holiday weekend.

Packed full of quality, from the best new bands like Brassy right through to top headline acts Pulp, Beck and Stereophonics, Leeds offers something for everyone.

But the main attraction of the weekend has to be appearance of Oasis on Monday night. With the fragile relationship of the Gallagher brothers reaching breaking point over recent weeks, it should make for a electric performance. And with rumours rife that this might be their farewell show it's a gig you want to be at.

Tickets are still on sale at £80 for the weekend and £33 a day. However if you want the chance to go free just answer this question. What was the name of the first Oasis album?

Send your answers to Pulse Leeds 2000 competition, Newspaper House, High Street, Blackburn. BB1 1HT, including a daytime telephone number. The winner will be first correct entry drawn on August 23. Employees of this newspaper and their families are not eligible. The prize is as stated and their is no cash alternative. The editor's decision is final.

Pendle is getting the blues

THE focus of the rhythm and blues world shifts to East Lancashire next weekend as thousands flock to the Great British R&B Festival in Pendle.

Organisers of the three-day event over August 25-28 are promising a line-up which will beat all previous events.

More than 70 artists are set to play across the three main stages over the four day event, with many more lining up to participate in the free roadhouse sessions and on the acoustic stage.

On the main international stage, based in Colne Municipal Hall, revellers can expect more magic moments from the Otis All Stars who, without doubt, produced THE performance of last year's bash.

Festival organiser Gary Hood said: "After last year's All Star's review, Otis and the festival received many requests from other international blues festivals in Europe and the US for the All Stars to go on the road but it couldn't be done.

"Once again, we are pulling together this special concert for a unique performance which is going to be historic."

On the European stage, held in Pendle Leisure Centre a rich array of talent will come to the fore.

Ranging from up and coming blues guitarist Ty Garner and harp player Johnny Mars on the Friday to Richie Milton's R&B orchestra sound on the Saturday, fans of the music genre are expected to be kept happy throughout.

On the Sunday, Third Degree kick off the day on the European Stage with a street festival theme, while Monday sees a contrast of styles, ranging from Rev Doc and the Congregation to the driving rhythms of the Elevators. King Pleasure and The Biscuit Boys wrap things up, naturally.

Castle festival

THOUSANDS are expected to flock to the Ribble Valley's biggest music event of the year, the Castle Clitheroe Festival 2000 next weekend.

The massive event will be held over three days, running from Saturday to Monday, with a different theme each day.

Saturday sees an unusual mix of acts, from cockney singers Chas and Dave to Yorkshire's The Woolpackers, who will let the crowd relive the song which gave rise to the line-dancing craze of a year ago.

On Sunday, some of the best Stars in Their Eyes performers will be on show, with soundalikes of Cher, the Beatles, Meatloaf and the Bee Gees, to name but a few, appearing.

Bank Holiday Monday plays host to what is being described as a 'Top of the Pops' day with Sweet, Bucks Fizz, China Crisis and Herman's Hermits all putting on performances.

Credit card bookings can be made by ringing 01200 423456.

Chance to win album

WITH Coldplay's stunning debut album the bookmakers' favourite to win this year's Technics Mercury music prize Pulse has a rather nice promo edition to give away.

Already a number one album, the band's work is among good company on the 12-strong shortlist.

Although they line up with artists like Richard Ashcroft, The Delgardos and the Doves, Pulse writer David Higgerson's money is on MJ Cole to walk away with the title, while Clive Lawrence has plumped for Badly Drawn Boy's brilliant The Hour of the Bewilderbeast.

All you have to do to win the Coldplay album, is tell us who Coldplays lead singer is. Send your answer on a postcard with a daytime telephone number to, Coldplay Competition, Lancashire Evening Telegraph, High Street, Blackburn, BB1 1HT. All the usual Pulse competition rules apply. Closing date is Thursday August 24.
