WHEN reading the press coverage concerning the outbreak of swine fever among British pigs over the last few days I learned with horror that this terrible epidemic could have been prevented.

The Government was given a report in 1998 published by pig experts about the possible danger of an outbreak of swine fever due to wild boar living in the countryside. However, the department of agriculture decided to do nothing. Pig farmers cannot afford for Nick Brown to be slow to act and action should have been taken to eliminate the risk of this source spreading the disease.

Farmers across the country are cash strapped and pig farmers needed this like a hole in the head.

If we needed any more proof that this Government doesn't care about farming or the countryside then this is it!
