TWO Fylde students have scooped cash prizes for their contribution to two Lancashire organisations while on summer placements.

Chloe Hudson and Laura Azern, both from St Annes, who took part in the Shell Technology Enterprise Programme (STEP) 2000, were presented with cheques for £150 & £100 respectively for the contribution they made during the eight-week placement.

Chloe is reading ancient & modern history at Oxford University and has spent her holidays with Education Business Partnership Link in Leyland. The company arranges work placements for school students and trainee teachers.

Chloe was faced with the challenging task of re-organising office layout and storage systems, a project identified by EPB Link as one which would enhance the already high standards of productivity and efficiency. Chloe's achievements were recognised and she won the Lancashire West prize for most enterprising student, sponsored by LAWTEC. Later in September she will make a presentation at the regional STEP competition.

Laura is a psychology student at Liverpool University. Her eight weeks have been spent with Preston Council for Voluntary Service, during which she has liaised with more than 200 community organisations and charities to produce a comprehensive directory of local voluntary organisations. Laura's placement was sponsored by Preston Borough Council.

Tony Bickerstaffe, managing director of LAWTEC, said: "The STEP presentation event is a real showcase of local talent which highlights the important contribution undergraduates can make to the success of the area's small businesses. The programme also provides an opportunity for local undergraduates to receive vocational experience in a challenging business environment." Companies or students interested in taking part in the next STEP should contact Sue Watkinson at Preston Business Venture on 01772 825723.
