A SCHOOL in Blackburn has come top of the class in its latest Ofsted report.

St Thomas's CE Primary School, Newton Street, was said to be a "highly effective school" with "very many significant strengths and very few weaknesses".

The school watchdog body praised the 400-pupil school for a curriculum which was described as broad and balanced with a good range of out-of-school activities.

The pupils, over half of whom come from families where English is not the first language, impressed the inspector with an attainment in English and maths which was above national expectation.

Inspectors also noted that there was an exceptionally high proportion of good to very good teaching.

The climate for learning at the school was also recognised in the Ofsted report for being "excellent" with pupils behaving both in class and around the school in an "outstanding" manner.

Headteacher Kath Haworth said: "We are obviously delighted with the report but not surprised as we believe St Thomas's to be an excellent school."
