CARL Gregory scored Ramford Ranger's 'first' goal in the St Helens Combination, to reply to the 50 goals scored against them in their first season.

Other goals in a 3-11 defeat by Bold Miners were put away by Shaun Beardwood and a Phil Anders penalty. Another new club, Owls Nest FC, went down 6-3 at newcomers United Churches FC whose goals came from Adam McQueen (3), Mike Doyle, Joey Donnelly and Darren Batley. Cowley Hill Park took advantage of Clock Face Miners Welfare Reserves having two players dismissed and gained full points with a 6-0 away win.

A pair from Jeff Smith, and others from brothers Ian and Andy Frazer gave Leach Lane a 4-1 win over Bull and Dog. Pilkingtons A, following a 6-0 slamming of Clock Face Miners Welfare Reserves in mid-week, went to Rainford North End Reserves and went under 2-1 to goals from Marcel Giglio and Lee Griffiths.

Another club on a double were Carr Mill Reserves who beat Owls Nest 5-1 in mid-week and scraped home 3-2 against Bowling Green.

Division One side Carborundum had a good 3-1 win at home over Broad Oak on the Tuesday but after leading 3-1 and missing a penalty on Saturday, they allowed Billinge Reserves to recover, and goals by Wiggins, Kenyon, Johnson and Mullin saw them through 3-4. Earlestown are the Division One in form outfit and survived their 100 per cent start to the season, with a 6-4 away win at Cowley Hill Park, whose goals came from Steve Bradley and a Jamie Foster hat-trick. Carl Ward hit the Hammer goals as they were held 1-1 at home by Hardshaw Argyle, who themselves were held 3-3 at home by Rifle in mid-week. Premier Division Champions, Carr Mill, at last showed their strength in depth by thumping in form Junction FC 6-0 at Sutton Manor. Penlake, who drew 3-3 at Carr Mill in mid-week, had no trouble in winning 5-1 at Nutgrove, Kevin McNabb (2), Mark Carrigg, Mike Baker and Anthony Winlow grabbing the goals. College St Helens initial game of the season in mid-week was an Eddie Furlong created 1-0 win at Rainford North End and the same player gave them a 1-1 draw at Billinge for whom Andy Rowe replied. Chris Dunn and Steve Corns (2) scored for Travellers by Clock Face Miners Welfare came good, late on, to run out 3-4 winners.

Incidentally, clubs, especially Division Two clubs, are reminded that Rifle Reserves are not in the Combination. They resigned before games began, so points will not be gained from their demise.

Up to now three Combination under 18s lads are due for Liverpool CFA Youth trials - these being Matty Innes and David Oaks of Bleak Hill Rovers and Gerard Arms plus Jonathon Harper, the Hardshaw Argyle defender.

At long last, a well known local footballing personality is expected to take over the under 18s reins, so leaving Chairman and long standing Inter League Manager Eric Bond able to carry on his other important duties. Talks are expected to be finalised this week. RESULTS
