ON behalf of Christian Aid we want to thank the people of Bury and district for their wonderful support during Christian Aid Week in May.
The house-to-house collection amounted to £17,218 and the final total for the year, including contributions and donations, was £19,185.
Christian Aid has devoted funds to those whose livelihoods were destroyed by floods in Mozambique and India, and it continues to help those experiencing famine as a result of the present drought in parts of Ethopia, Eritrea, Somalia and Kenya.
Christian Aid, however, devotes most of its income to long-term development in 60 Third World countries through 700 partner groups. It is given to people irrespective of colour or creed. Funds are used to provide seeds, wells, irrigation, health care, trade training and community development.
We also wish to thank hundreds of volunteers from 38 churches who joined an army of 300,000 collectors nationwide. They raised £11.5 million, excluding a further £600,000 expected from tax-back claims, and established another new record in Christian Aid Week this millennium year.
JOHN BISSON,
Bury Christian Aid committee.
