I REGRET that Councillor Dave Smith (Letters, September 8) appeared to be flummoxed by my simple suggestion that the electorate of Blackburn with Darwen be given an opportunity, in May 2001, to vote on whether they approve or disapprove of the current form of local government or the choice suggested by Councillor Smith of an elected mayor.
I found the action of three senior Labour councillors, Peter Greenwood, Mike Madigan and Don Rishton, cause for disquiet.
Each has given long and faithful service to the Labour Party and town. They have shown independence of mind, which is greatly appreciated by the electorate.
Now, possibly, Coun Smith will give a plain answer to my question: "Does the ruling party intend to allow the electorate a vote on how the borough should be ruled?"
