ST HELENS CC said goodbye to the Millennium season by losing to third-placed Worsley.

Batting first Burrows (16) and Tyms (24) started well but the next three wickets fell cheaply before Steve Kenny arrived at the crease for only his third game of the season. A 42-ball 50 made St Helens realise how much they have missed him and with no other innings of any consequence the 10-man team had to be satisfied with 137 all out.

Worsley made short work of winning the game with 138 for 2 off 28 overs with former Lancashire batsman Andy Hayhurst scoring 11 fours in his 55 not out. Neil Woods celebrated his last game as captain by relinquishing the wicket-keeper's pads and taking one of the wickets to fall.

By contrast, the second team have had an excellent season but their hopes of promotion were dashed by losing to Northern who declared at 183 for 5 after 60 overs. Ian Davies bowled throughout to take 3 for 67. The run chase proved unsuccessful and St Helens were bowled out for 85 with Gareth Davies scoring 41.

The third team entertained Northern in the last game of the season. The visitors batting first declared at 157 for 9 with Luke Booth taking 4 for 49, Rob Supria 2 for 36, and Gareth Griffiths 1 for 16. On the resumption only Gareth Griffiths (27) and Karl Boardman (15) reached double figures and the innings closed at 74 all out. The shortage of players at first team level has resulted in several young players being thrown in at the deep end but they have acquitted themselves well and gained valuable experience.
