MERSEYSIDE Fire Service is urging homeowners to reduce their risk of death or injury in house fires by planning a potential escape route, should the worst happen.
Every year, 20 people die and 500 are injured in house fires on Merseyside alone. Backed by the Home Office, the 'Make your plan -- Get out alive' campaign aims to encourage all householders to consider how they would escape from a fire at their home.
The fire service are advising residents to help themselves by developing a Fire Action Plan which should include:
Identifying a number of practical escape routes
Installing a smoke alarm
Making sure that everyone knows where door keys are kept
Keeping doors closed at night
Regularly conducting your own fire drill.
Chief Fire Officer, Malcolm Saunders said: "Many deaths and injuries from house fires could be prevented by taking some basic precautions. Making a Fire Action Plan with your family and ensuring that everyone knows what to do in the event of a house fire could give you the extra few minutes needed to get out safely."
