CAR thieves should watch out! -- That's the message from Preston Police after a recent crackdown on car crime.

Since the launch of Operation Dolby three months ago officers have cut car theft by almost 30 per cent after targeting specific areas in Preston, Fulwood and Lea.

While focusing on areas of high crime, including car parks and town centre streets, the police have backed up their results with statistical analysis to try and spot trends.

Inspector Dave Asbridge, who is spearheading the operation, said: "Recently we have stepped up the operation.

"We've used uniformed and plain clothed officers and employed a variety of methods, including targeting a number of known offenders."

But the police say that it is difficult to accurately pinpoint where and when crimes occur as daily levels vary with around three to ten cars being stolen each day.

And they are urging the car users not to leave expensive valuables and items such as mobile phones, handbags and wallets, on display in their parked vehicles.

Inspector Asbridge added: "As long as people are leaving these things on view there will always be 'smash and grab' offenders."
