SIX Lytham student scientists are winging their way to Eastern Europe on September 21 to take part in an international science seminar.

The students from King Edward VII and Queen Mary School will spend ten days in Germany with their counterparts from schools in Wrzburg and Hradec Kralove in the Czech Republic.

The three boys and three girls will be led by Graham Finney, head of modern languages at the Lytham School and his colleague, Sarah Hall.

Christopher Fox, 14, of Newton with Scales, said he thought the group were all looking forward to the experience.

"We are all keen scientists," he said. "This will be a very big challenge. I know we are going to build a telescope and also do experiments in connection with solar cells and hydrogen technology." The group will be staying with German families and will spend part of the time in a special science centre close to Wrzburg.

The seminar is the fourth such co-operation between the three schools and was hosted in Lytham last autumn.

Joanna Pemberton of Park View Road in Lytham sees the week as an opportunity to improve her spoken German.

"I am sure that the social side of the week will be enjoyable and exciting," she said. "Five of the six Lytham students have just started to study German for GCSE.

"This is a great opportunity to practise our speaking and listening skills."
