LEIGH angler John Hynes hit the jackpot with a bronze medal and £1351 cash prize by finishing third in the Embassy Division Two National Individual Angling Championship on the river Nene in Peterborough.

Bus driver John from Ennerdale Road, who fishes for the Leigh DAA and is sponsored by Whizzo, landed a couple of bream on the tip and then switched to a 13 metre pole, using worm on a size 20 hook to 12oz line before moving up to a size 16 on 2lb.

He said: "This is my best result in a big match. I had never seen the river before and lost three fish. Nevertheless I weighed in with 11.050kg of bream."

The only disappointment for John was that the Leigh DAA was relegated to Division Four after finishing 78th overall.
