A REGENERATION scheme in Blackburn has been praised by social security secretary Alistair Darling.

He said the Single Regeneration Scheme was an example to other areas of how to combat poverty and social exclusion.

As the cabinet minister launched the government's Second Annual Poverty Report, he singled out the scheme which started last year in the Blackburn Central area.

It has created or safeguarded 3,350 jobs, helped with 140 business start-ups and improved access to education and skills training and crime prevention measures.

Mr Darling said: "Projects that we set out in our first annual report to tackle poverty and social exclusion have moved off the drawing board and into people's lives."
